Umhlanga, the beautiful bustling metropolitan in Durban; South Africa is a vibey, fun and dedicated tourist attraction spot. Being close to the beach, there are many fun tourist type attractions in the surrounding area for everyone to enjoy and so we have decided to identify 10 of the best things to do and see in Umhlanga whether you’re a tourist or a local

The first on our list is an obvious one, who comes to Umhlanga and does not visit the beach? Apart from just being a beautiful shoreline, Umhlanga is home to one of the world’s most beautiful pier’s as well as the “oh so famous” lighthouse (featured at number 6 on our list.)


Whether it is a relaxing walk on the beach, Dinky Donuts (a must have); or ice-cream on the promenade, we highly recommend paying this magnificent shoreline a visit
Rainy day? Not to fear, Gateway Theatre of Shopping is near.


Situated on top of the Umhlanga Ridge is Gateway Theatre of Shopping, THE biggest Shopping Centre to hit the Southern Hemisphere as well as one of the biggest in Africa. How impressive? With a massive selection of retail stores, restaurants; take-away outlets as well as cinemas, tenpin bowling, go-karting, indoor soccer fields, a games room and the Wavehouse featuring the D-Rex (double-point break standing wave,) some slides and fun for the little ones, Gateway is sure to have something for everyone.


If you feel like something a little bit more mentally stimulating, the Natal Sharks Board is most certainly the place to be.


Being the only organisation of its kind in the world, the Natal Sharks Board is a global leader in bather protection against sharks whilst minimising environmental impact and promoting tourism. Tourists and scholars are educated through dynamic audio-visuals as well as shark dissections, really getting into the nitty-gritty of things.


If you’re down to test your luck, Sibaya Casino and Entertainment World is definitely a must!

With an array of restaurants, the Mangwanani Spa and a large Casino and entertainment section, Sibaya is sure to give you that truly African feeling.

More of an adventurous spirit? Then you most certainly want to head down to Ocean Blue Scuba.



With a huge variety of courses and specials, you are sure to enjoy learning how to Scuba dive, OR – if you’re already certified- experiencing the dive sites around the Umhlanga area. Alternatively, if the ocean isn’t really sparking excitement then there are the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Trails that boasts fantastic walks and a great way to get everyone outdoors over a long weekend. Situated close to Umhlanga, the Lagoon Nature Trails are not hard to get to and sport some beautiful scenery, birdlife, duiker and bushbuck siting’s for all to enjoy.

If you’re into fine dining or just having a few laughs over some tasty cocktails and snacks then the Oyster Box Hotel is the place to be. With their fantastic Lighthouse Bar, overlooking the Umhlanga Promenade and the Lighthouse itself, you are sure to relax and unwind in this magnificent establishment. A haven for many wetland and coastal forest birds as well as one of the best bird watching sites on the coats, be sure to visit when you’re around town.


The last stop on our list is the Umhlanga Art Gallery. If you’re an avid supporter of local art then head on down to the Umhlanga Art Gallery. The Umhlanga Art Gallery hosts a number of artworks of Mr Nelson Mandela and numerous other top South African Artists and significant history makers.
